Mountain Wagon on the road

Seeing a Stanley Steamer in the course of everyday life is becoming a VERY VERY rare event indeed!  That's why a key element of The Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve mission is acquainting the general public with steam vehicles and their operation.

We accomplish our mission -- by inviting the public to our facilities at Auburn Heights, by taking portions of the collection to car shows and historical exhibitions, by identifying events of historical significance to automotive history and partnering with organizers.

We are dedicated to seeing that our community doesn't forget that there are alternatives to gasoline engines and that steam played a safe, clean, renewable role in transportation, and might possibly do so again!

100th Anniversary Speed Record - Ormond Beach Florida January 26, 2006

A once in a lifetime trip to Florida and Daytona's Ormond Beach to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the last Steam Powered Speed Record which was set on January 26, 1906.  Over 6 years in planning this spectacular event, sponsored by the Stanley Museum in Maine, included an historic re-enactment of the Rocket's beachfront run using a replica built by Morris Frost in 1971, and piloted by Robert Landrey - great grandson of Fred Marriott.

The Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve were proud to participate in this event and mustered 21 members and 8 Stanley Cars!!!

The Birthplace of Speed - Ormond Beach Florida January 29, 2005

A four day trip to Florida and Daytona's Ormond Beach; "The Original Daytona Speedway"!  It was here that the last Steam Powered Speed Record was set on January 26, 1906.  On that day Fred Marriott attained a speed of 121.57mph over the flat sands of Daytona Beach.  It took gas powered cars almost four years to break Marriott’s speed record and it might have taken even longer had Marriott's next attempt the following year not ended in disaster.

It was fitting therefore for a Stanley vehicle 100 years old to take part in the celebrations commemorating this historic age of steam vs. gasoline racing competition.
