Purchased in 1975 from Robert Smith of St. Michaels, MD
Mr. Smith sold Tom
Marshall the car for $ 2,500, and said the boiler had been re-tubed during his
ownership when he lived on Long Island, probably about 1960. The engine was
changed at Auburn Heights as there was an identical one in better condition. A
quick Bicentennial red, white, and blue paint job was applied, and the car was
used at several parades in 1976. It was also run for several days on the Steam
Car Tour of 1982 at Orillia, Ontario, but there was trouble in keeping the pilot
burning properly. We modified the pilot vaporizer by installing a short U-tube,
and used the car this way on 2 one and two cylinder car tours in 1986 (Wooster,
Ohio) and 1987 (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario). A U-tube vaporizer was not the
answer, however, on early cars with a single fuel system, and this was replaced
with a modified vaporizer from an early 2-nozzle burner, with one of the three
vaporizer tubes cut away. This works well, but is hard to light prior to firing
up. The car was given a new paint job at Auburn Heights and new leather
installed in 1986. It has been driven about 750 miles since its acquisition in
1975.
