Purchased from a Mr. Gould of Union, NH, in 1945.
Professionally restored by Charles W. Johnson in 1998
The first restoration of this car was by Hyde Ballard and Dick French
at their shop in Bala-Cynwyd, PA, in 1946, and it was driven to and
shown at the AACA Fall Meet at Devon that year. Apparently an excellent
original car, about the only mechanical work that we knew of at that
time was the installation of a newly-retubed boiler, and a wheel change
(unless this had been done at an earlier date) to 26" from the original
29", making it possible to use 34 x 4 straight side tires. The car was
driven on the 1947 and 1952 Glidden Tours, and used on many steam car
tours. About 1976, new Elster Hayes wheels and rims were exchanged,
making it possible to get much closer to the original-sized tires, the
new rims being 28" to accept 36 x 4 straight-side tires. In 1992, the
Hayes rims were replaced with heavier new rims supplied by Bruce Green
of Cleveland, Tennessee. The burner was rebuilt about 1976 and again
after the Kalamazoo Steam Car Tour of 1993. During, 1998, a
professional restoration was applied by Charles W. Johnson of
Wellsville, PA, during which time the engine was modernized with
hard-chromed piston rods and bronze crosshead guides, and much frame
and body work was done. Rear Barrett hydraulic brakes were installed
during this restoration. This car has probably been driven about 5,000
miles since 1946.
