Purchased in 1946 by Tom Marshall from Donald H. Randall of Randolph, MA., for $500
A newly-built-up burner was installed in December, 1946, at Mr. Randall’s
and the car was driven home to Delaware, 400 miles. It was driven about
10,000 miles between then and 1952, and in 1949 underwent a restoration
in Bill Allaband’s shop in Kennett Square, PA. The original paint scheme
had been black body and fenders and gray wheels and undercarriage, which
was redone in blue and red, retaining the black fenders. Two wrist pins
were broken in 1949, blowing out the cylinder head each time. The car
completed the Glidden Tour in 1948, and almost completed it in 1949, and
was driven twice to New England in 1948 and 1952 to attend Steam Car meets.
Everything about the car is quite original except the burner, which is
a 23” (20 H.P.) grate with burner pan drawn in to fit the 20” boiler,
and a new water tank was made for the car by Keebaugh Sheet Metal in 1999.
The boiler may have been re-tubed as recently as 1972, and the engine
rods should be hard-chromed.
