This may have been the 4th Model 735 produced and was bought from the
original owner in New Haven, CT, with 5038 miles on the odometer in 1946 at a cost
of $ 75.
Repainted by Bill Allaband in Kennett Square, and probably having a newly-retubed
boiler, this car was driven on the 1947 Glidden Tour in New England and the 1953 Glidden
to Detroit. Returning from the latter trip about 75 miles from home (after traveling
nearly 1,500) the engine became rough, and we barely made it home. The valve seats were
badly scored, as we had not been pumping enough oil. In 1957, the car was equipped with
another engine to which had been affixed a Donald Gibson cylinder block with piston
valves. A longer superheater was made, and we drove the car to Kent, Ohio, and return
for the Steam Car Meet in August that year. The wheels were changed to a size of 35 x 5
from the original size of 35 x 5 (45 x 4 ½) about 1980. New leather, top, and side
curtains were installed about 1989. As of February, 2000, this car had been driven just
over 10,000 miles since 1918. A flat condenser was installed behind a "dummy grille" on
the brass radiator shell in 1947.
